Businesses Back Detroit in Full-Page Ad
The ad entitled “Here’s $250 billion that says the city of Detroit has a very bright future” first appeared on Sunday, September 22, in the New York Times, Washington Post, Detroit Free Press, and Detroit News. Since then, it has also been shown in several other high profile, national publications including the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Politico.com.
Paid for by 28 of Detroit’s largest companies and organizations, including the Big 3 automakers, the $250 billion referenced represents their combined market capitalization value. Among the 28 are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, GM, Meijer, and PNC Bank to name a few.
Aware of the negative publicity the city of Detroit had been receiving portraying it as a “dying city”, Dan Loepp, president of CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Gerry Anderson, chairman, president and CEO of DTE Energy wanted to direct attention towards the thriving downtown, and other promising areas.
To demonstrate a community where business stills remains committed and invested, they then reached out to their peers for a statement of support.
The ad references the municipal’s well-known bankruptcy but also includes that both Detroit’s residential occupancy and downtown office market occupancy are at their “highest levels in decades.” The ad concludes by simply stating, “Because we believe in Detroit. The real Detroit.”
